ColorClad® is a premium grade solid color tile grout sealant. It is oil repellent, stain resistant, breathable, flexible, waterproof, color stable and non-yellowing. It has excellent hiding and incorporates aluminum oxide for added durability. With ZERO VOC’s it provides no air quality impact, better than solvent based and even low VOC water-based sealers and stains. This is a very thick coating. It is designed that way to aid in vertical applications, filling pits and small cracks in grout and for package stability (reduces settling).
There are 8 core colors that are used to make the 89 standard colors on the Color Selection Guide. There are no tint bases or colorants in the system, simply 8 Core Colors. Each color is a finished, complete Color Seal product, ready to use. Every color on the ColorClad Color Selection Guide is a combination of only 2 of the Core Colors. How to Use the ColorClad® Core Color System
Step 1: Select the Correct Grout Color
Begin by identifying the desired grout color using the ColorClad® Color Selection Guide or, for maximum accuracy, the Color Stick Book. Because the Color Stick Book contains actual cured ColorClad samples, it provides the most reliable color match for existing grout installations.
Step 2: Thoroughly Clean the Grout
Proper surface preparation is critical for long-term performance. Clean the grout lines using a professional alkaline cleaner such as MB-2 Alkaline HD to remove dirt, grease, oils, soap residue, and embedded contaminants. A follow-up rinse with an appropriate acid cleaner to etch the surface of the grout for better adhesion may be needed as well.
Avoid relying solely on acidic cleaners, as acids primarily etch the surface rather than fully removing embedded soil. For heavily soiled grout, allow the alkaline cleaner to dwell for 10–15 minutes before scrubbing.
Step 3: Scrub and Rinse the Surface
Agitate the grout lines using an appropriate grout brush or floor machine. Once cleaned, rinse thoroughly and remove excess residue with clean water. The grout should be free of contaminants before applying ColorClad®.
Step 4: Allow the Grout to Become Slightly Damp
ColorClad® performs best on clean grout that is slightly damp—not saturated. A small amount of moisture can actually assist with application and bonding, while excessively wet grout may interfere with proper adhesion.
Step 5: Prepare the ColorClad® Mixture
If creating a custom color, blend the required core colors according to the ColorClad® color chart. Mix thoroughly until a consistent color is achieved.
For standard colors, simply shake or stir the product according to manufacturer recommendations before use.
Step 6: Select the Appropriate Applicator
Choose the correct ColorClad® brush cap size based on grout joint width. Narrow joints typically benefit from smaller applicators, while wider grout joints allow for larger brush caps that improve production speed.
Step 7: Apply ColorClad® to the Grout Lines
Apply the product directly onto the grout joints using smooth, controlled strokes. Work in manageable sections to maintain consistency and avoid allowing excess material to dry on the tile surface.
Ensure complete coverage of the grout while avoiding excessive buildup.
Step 8: Remove Excess Product from the Tile Surface
After application, wipe the tile surface using a slightly damp shammies while leaving the ColorClad® in the grout joints. Wipe at an angle diagonally across the joints.
Continue cleaning until the tile surface is free of residue and the grout lines appear uniform.
Step 9: Inspect and Touch Up as Needed
Review the completed section under good lighting. Touch up any missed areas, inconsistent coverage, or grout lines that require additional color correction before moving to the next section.
Step 10: Allow the Surface to Cure
Allow the product to fully cure according to manufacturer recommendations before exposing the surface to heavy traffic, water, or routine cleaning.
Once cured, the grout will have a restored, uniform appearance along with enhanced stain resistance, water repellency, and long-term protection.
